Storm girls soccer wins sixth game

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake girls soccer team continued its winning ways Monday by topping the Seton Catholic Knights 5-1 on the road.

Tyler Burth recorded a hat trick and added an assist to help the Red Storm improve to 6-3-1 overall. Mar Carmona Guarido and Brisa Brunette each found the back of the net once. Stephanie Kilbourne-Hill chipped in with an assist.

Despite outshooting the Knights 24-5, the Red Storm didn’t get off to the hot start it wanted as the team connected on just one goal in the first half coming off the foot of Burth.

“Seton did a really nice job especially early on,” Saranac Lake head coach Jason Wamsganz said. “They played hard and have improved. I feel like we are a better team than they are, but you have to get off the bus ready to go. We were a bit sluggish and didn’t play our brand of soccer in the first half. (We had) a lot of miscues and we didn’t possess the ball exceptionally well. That’s got to be a learning point for our team and better prepare (ourselves) mentally and be ready to go on the first whistle.”

Early in the second half, Seton Catholic’s Megan Mast evened the game on an unassisted goal. However, the Red Storm responded with four consecutive scores to put the game away.

“Our wings got into a rhythm, defense played much better and Tyler took control of the offense in a different way than she has had to,” Wamsganz said. “She was trying to distribute and we were just not getting to her passes.”

With the game tied, Burth set up Carmona Guarido, who buried a shot to take the lead. Burth extended her team’s lead with pair of goals herself, before Brunette closed out the contest with an unassisted goal.

“(Burth) knows that when she gets a lane to the goal, she has the green light to take the shot,” Wamsganz said. “It really made their defense not sure how to play her and she was then able to make some passes to the forwards for some scoring chances.”

Saranac Lake’s Emma Akey recorded four saves in net, while the Knights’ Brooke Bilow and Lacee LaPoint combined for 19 stops.

The Red Storm, which improved to 6-3-1, will travel to Ticonderoga for a game today, before returning home Friday for a match against Moriah. Both games are scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.

“All in all, not the start we wanted, but we ended on a good note,” Wamsganz said. “I expect that to carry over when we travel to Ti on Wednesday. It’s always tough playing down there and they are playing much better right now than when we played them in early September.”
