Storm boys top rivals in soccer
LAKE PLACID — After dropping its last three games, the Saranac Lake boys soccer team turned in a solid performance against host Lake Placid, winning 4-1 on Monday afternoon.
Mason Stoddard scored twice and had an assist in a game that saw Saranac Lake out shoot its rivals 22-7. Zack McCarthy and Ethan Knight also scored for the Red Strorm, while McCarthy, Knight and Dillon Wilson recorded an assist apiece.
Seb Cecunjanin netted the lone goal for the Blue Bombers, with Max Perez assisting on the play.
“We had a rough week last week, so this was a good bounce back,” Saranac Lake head coach Brad Rafferty said. “That was the best we’ve passed the ball all season. We kind of just gave ourselves time and space, and I think it was a confidence booster and hopefully it will carry us through the week.”
With the win, the Red Storm improved to 3-5 overall. Meanwhile Lake Placid, which was coming off a 1-0 victory over Seton Catholic, dropped to 3-5 overall.
Blue Bombers head coach Chris Mariano said his team played well and showed some solid passing, but Saranac Lake is a good team.
“I thought offensively (we) played better than (we) have in the past, but we could’ve played a little better defensively, particularly on the corner kicks,” he said.
The Red Storm buried its first two goals off of corner kicks, with McCarthy heading in the first on a kick from Stoddard with 14:07 remaining before intermission. Stoddard then sent home the team’s second goal less than two minutes into the second half on Wilson’s corner attempt.
“We’ve had so many corner kicks without goals this year, so it’s nice to get two,” Rafferty said.
Saranac Lake extended its lead to 3-0, when Stoddard connected on pass from Knight. But Lake Placid responded when Cecunjanin collected a pass from Perez and split through the Red Storm defense to put his team on the board. The goal was Cecunjanin’s sixth of the season, which is a team-high.
“Sebi is a handful,” Rafferty said. “If he’s in the back they’re strong in the back. If he’s upfront they’re strong upfront.”
Knight ended any hopes of a comeback, scoring the final goal from about 30 yards out to put the Red Storm on top 4-1 with 15:10 left in the game.
Lake Placid’s goaltender Will Landriault had 15 saves before being relieved by Justin Lushia in the second half. Lushia recorded four saves, while Saranac Lake’s Cedar Crist had three.
Following the contest, the Red Storm will take on Northern Adirondack at 4:30 p.m. today on the road. The Blue Bombers will host AuSable Valley at 4:30 p.m. today.
