Red Storm girls soccer tie Northern Adirondack

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake girls soccer team recorded a 1-1 double overtime draw with the Northern Adirondack Bobcats on Thursday.

“It was an exciting back-and-forth contest,” Red Storm head coach Jason Wamsganz said. “Their goalie made some really nice saves to keep them in it. I thought we had a sequence of chances in the first OT that were going to find the back of their net, but it didn’t bounce that way. Credit to them. Jason Seguin does a great job coaching his team, and it’s always a bit of a chess match when going against them. It’s fun.”

Saranac Lake opened up the scoring when Anika Wamsganz netted a pass from Tyler Burth around 14 minutes into the game. However, the Bobcats responded a few minutes later when Ava Moore buried a shot.

Coach Wamsgamz said he was pleased with his team’s performance, considering that Northern Adirondack beat Saranac Lake 3-1 earlier in the season.

“Ava Moore scored two of their goals the first time we faced them, and we really needed to shut her down without having to lock on her,” he said. “We let her get away from us once today, and she’s good enough to make you pay. Zu Oliveras did a really nice job, as did Karissa Holmes, who we added to our roster this past week. Our defenders really played well, and Emma (Akey) had a few big saves to keep us in it. She made an incredible save in the second OT off of a direct kick from about 35 yards out. When she is locked in, she’s as good as any goalie in our division.”

Akey recorded nine saves for the Red Storm, while Northern Adirondack’s goalie Hallie Gilmore had seven.

Following the game, the Red Storm’s record is 5-3-1. The team is slated to play three games this week, kicking off with a road contest against Seton Catholic today, followed by an away game on Wednesday against Ticonderoga and a home match Friday against Moriah. All games are scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.

“Teams we beat on the front end of the season are going to come at us on the back half,” Coach Wamsganz said. “We really need to take the approach that we take care of business and focus on us, one game at a time and try and knock off teams that beat us the first time around. We’ve been dealt some unfortunate injuries and had a few more against NAC, but we’ve moved people around and they are gaining experience and confidence.”

Starting at $4.75/week.
