PSC men earn to third place finish at invitational
PAUL SMITHS — The Paul Smith’s College men’s cross country team placed third overall at the Founding Tree Invitational in Amherst, Massachusetts on Saturday.
The Bobcat men were led by Eliot Soderhold of Reston, Virginia who placed 11th overall in 29 minutes, 4 seconds. Phil Matthews of Waterford placed 24th overall in 31:03, followed by Edison Byrum of Twelve Mile, Indiana, in 31:05 and Wes Burkit of Bath, Pennsylvania in 31:10. Zack Viertel of Amherst rounded out the scoring five for the Bobcats with a personal best time of 34:27 to place 60th overall.
Norwich University won the men’s 8-kilometer race with 46 points, followed by Fitchburg State with 53 points in second and Paul Smith’s College with 125 in third.
On the women’s side, Joanna Kershner paced the Bobcats with a 16th place finish in a time of 28:22. Kershner’s time was more than 10 minutes faster than her efforts a week ago at St. Lawrence University’s Ronald Hoffmann Invitational.
Chloe Freund of Clinton improved her 6K time by 2 minutes finishing in 29:06 to place 24th, while Brooklynn Shumway of Bloomingdale placed 31st in 30:22.
Up next for the cross country team is the Paul Smith’s College 10K and Half Marathon on Saturday.
The race will begin with an 8 a.m. at the entrance to the college. The 10K and half marathon will run through the junction of state Routes 86 and 30, heading southwest toward Saranac Lake, and then following the Jones Pond, Rainbow Lake Road and the Oregon Plains Road with the half marathon finishing near the former Norman’s Store in Bloomingdale.
