Bobcats XC teams repeat as YSCC champions

PAUL SMITHS — The Paul Smith’s College men’s and women’s cross country teams repeated as Yankee Small College Conference champions on Saturday in Amherst, Massachussets.

Led by Eliot Soderholm, the Bobcat men earned by a four-point margin over Word of Life, scoring 43 points. On the women’s 6K side, Ellen Haas paced Paul Smith’s, helping the team edge out race host Hampshire College 40-41.

It was the third year in a row that the men’s team has won the conference title, while the women’s team has won it three of the last four seasons.

Haas, of Red Creek, placed fourth overall in the women’s race in 27 minutes, 43 seconds. She became the third women’s runner ever from Paul Smith’s College to earn YSCC All-Conference team honors for four consecutive years.

Teammates Joanna Kershner of Reading, Pennsylvania placed sixth in 28:31, and captain Brooklynn Shumway of Bloomingdale was seventh place in 29:08. Kershner and Shumway earned YSCC All-Conference team honors for the second year in row.

Paul Smith’s student and Clinton native Chloe Freund (29:36) finished in ninth, and teammate and Le Roy native Ashley Carli (35:16) was 22nd.

On the men’s side, Soderholm, of Reston, Virginia, was second overall in 28:25.6 while teammate and Ithaca native Banyan Love (28:40.5) was third. Wesley Burkit, of Bath, Pennsylvania, placed seventh in 30:07. The trio earned All-Conference honors.

The Bobcats were rounded out by Edison Byrum (30:22) of Twelve Mile, Indiana in eighth place; Zack Viertel (34:27) of Amherst in 24th; Carson Wohlers in 25th in 34:49; Aidan Minihan (38:24) of Wilmington, Delaware in 40th; and Ryan Brothers (44:26) of Brasher Falls in 45th place.

The Paul Smith’s cross country teams will finish the collegiate season on Nov. 10 during the USCAA Cross Country Nationals at the Penn State-Fayette campus.
