SL boys, LP girls sweep meet

SARANAC LAKE — The high school cross country season kicked off on Tuesday at the Dewey Mountain Recreation Center for two area teams. Saranac Lake hosted Lake Placid, Ticonderoga and Moriah/Boquet Valley for the opening meet of the season.

The Saranac Lake boys, which were led by Jake Kollmer, swept the meet with a 23-28 victory over Lake Placid; a 17-46 win over the Ticonderoga Sentinels and a 15-49 win over Moriah/Boquet Valley.

The Blue Bomber boys had a solid outing, beating Ticonderoga 25-31 and Moriah/Boquet Valley 18-42. The Sentinels also topped Moriah/Boquet Valley 19-43.

The Lake Placid girls, which are eager for its sixth consecutive Section VII, Class D title, defeated its three opponents after three Blue Bombers runners claimed the top three spots. Lake Placid defeated Ticonderoga and Moriah/Boquet Valley and edged out Saranac Lake 24-31.

The Red Storm girls cruised past Moriah/Boquet Valley and Ticonderoga by identical 15-50 scores. The Sentinels topped Moriah/Boquet Valley 22-33.

Kollmer, the reigning Section VII and Champlain Valley Athletic Conference champion, was his usual self, winning the boys race in 16 minutes, 55 seconds. Shortly behind was Lake Placid’s Aidan Fay (17:08) in second and Colin Francis (17:55) in third. Saranac Lake runners Keaton Daley (18:34) and Alex Evans (18:48) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Lake Placid’s Leila Fey, a seventh grader, was the first across the line in the girls race, clocking a finish time of 20:25. She was followed by teammates Kai McKinnon (20:38) and Maya Garrison (21:33) in third. Saranac Lake’s Cadence Kennedy, a freshman, took fourth in 21:40, and teammate Clementine Guenette was fifth in 22:49.

The Lake Placid cross country teams will host Northeastern Clinton and Plattsburgh in its next meet on Tuesday, Sept. 17. The Red Storm will travel to Point Au Roche State Park for a meet against Beekmantown and Seton Catholic on Sept. 17. Both meets will start at 4:30 p.m.
