Second half dooms Red Storm girls soccer
SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake girls soccer team suffered a 3-1 loss to the Northern Adirondack Bobcats on the road Wednesday.
The Bobcats connected on three goals in the second half and outshot the Red Storm 8-7. Saranac Lake’s lone goal came off the foot of junior Tyler Burth with 12 minutes left in the game. It was set up by Mar Carmona Guarido.
“We panicked at times and started playing boot ball and it really tired us out,” Red Storm head coach Jason Wamsganz said. “NAC had a goal that I felt was a good play and good shot. The other two were miscues on our part and we need to do a better job of picking the opponent up at our end of the field. We talk about having your head on a swivel and not just watching the ball and losing your mark.”
The Red Storm had plenty of scoring opportunities, including a few in the early stages of the opening half. During that stretch the team hit the crossbar and had another shot go just wide of a wide open half net.
“If some of our chances find the back of the net early on, it’s a completely different game, but that’s the reality of sports and you don’t win or lose on the what-ifs,” Wamsganz said. “We have a plan ready to go for practice to clean some of the mistakes up and we move forward.”
Wamsganz said Burth and Abby Walkow had a solid performance. He added that his squad played hard but has some things that they need to work on going forward.
With the loss, the Red Storm fall to 1-1 on the season. The team is slated to host the Seton Catholic Knights at 4:30 p.m. today. Last year, the two teams tied in its two matchups — both of which went to double overtime.
“It should be a good game and our girls will be ready,” Wamsganz said.
