Ruggers cap off three-day tourney
SARANAC LAKE — While the 50th annual Can-Am Rugby Tournament showcased 120 teams vying for a championship title across nine divisions, one of the furthest teams from this area made sure that they wouldn’t leave empty-handed.
The San Diego Surfers, a women’s rugby club based in California, dominated the three-day tournament, winning its first three games by a combined score of 123-0. The squad then won the women’s club division title 14-5 over the Golden Girls on Sunday.
Despite its name, only six girls on the team are actually from San Diego, according to San Diego Surfers coach Te Awhina Ho Chee.
“Everybody else was from the New York Rugby Club, we had some Arizona team B, we had representation from all over the nation,” she said.
Ho Chee, who lives in San Diego and is originally from New Zealand, said Rugby is best played when everyone is having fun and they all have one collective idea.
“I think we had a lot of fun because we had a lot of representation of rugby players from all over the states and not just the Surfers, so it was cool for them to just come under the moniker of the Surfers, but still play some pretty awesome, expensive but fun rugby.”
Despite being based out west, Ho Chee said the Surfers’ team has always wanted to play in the Can-Am Rugby Yournament, considering it’s one of the most well-known tournaments in the U.S.
“It was fun to be able to put together a touring side and come to a great tournament,” she said. “It was fun for us to come to Saranac (Lake) because we knew we would have a good time and the rugby was highly competitive as well.”
On the men’s side of the club division, the Buffalo Rugby Club defeated Albany Knickerbocker RFC 32-10 in Sunday’s championship game at Petrova Field.
Sunday marked the final day of the Can-Am Rugby Tournament, which ended after the men’s premier division championship contest.
After winning the men’s club title last season, the White Plains Rugby Football Club (Warpigs) won the men’s premier division title 24-17 over the Myths and Legends rugby team on Sunday.
The Warpigs dominated from the start, leading 21-5 at halftime. The Myths and Legends scored 12 points in the second half, but were unable to mount a comeback.
The Mountaineers men’s premier team lost to Kutztown 27-19 on Friday, fell to the Hyenas 26-24 on Saturday morning and were defeated by the Cardinals 45-10 on Saturday night.
Danbury Rugby Football Club swept both the men’s and women’s social division titles. The men beat Arbutian Revolution 18-15, while the Danbury women defeated the Rochester Renegades 24-19.
The Mountaineers men’s social team lost its two contests. The team fell 17-14 to SCARF 2 and were defeated 20-7 to I77 Renegades. The Mountaineers women’s team was defeated in both of its pool play games. The team lost to the Mother Ruckers by a score of 52-7 and fell to Team Pretty 45-0 on Saturday.
