SARANAC LAKE — The Olga Memorial Footrace will return to this village on Aug. 17. The event features a 5K and a 10K run and a 5K walk.

The race was created 27 years ago to help Saranac Lake native and foot racer Olga Figueroa pay for her medical treatments as she battled cancer. While Figueroa ultimately died from the disease, the race has continued in honor of her legacy.

The organizers’ goal is to raise $10,000 this year. The proceeds will benefit local youth through increased programming at the Saranac Lake Youth Center and enhance the Saranac Lake Rotary Club’s literacy program, which puts a book in the hands of every child in elementary school within the Saranac Lake school district.

The Olga Memorial Footrace course is mostly flat, circling Moody Pond and passing by Lake Flower. The 10K is a two loop course. Race results, raffle and awards ceremony will immediately follow the last finisher. There will be three water stations on the course.

Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers in each age division of the 5K and 10K races. There will also be awards to top male and female finishers in the two age divisions in the walk.
