Storm boys track place third at sectionals

LAKE PLACID — The Saranac Lake boys track and field team’s chances of winning a fourth straight sectional title ended at the Section VII championship meet here on Wednesday.

The Saranac Lake boys placed third with 105 points. The Peru Nighthawks won the event with 176.5 and Saranac Central was second with 146. The Lake Placid boys scored 19 points to finish sixth out of 11 teams.

On the girls’ side, the Saranac Central Spartans claimed the title with 246 points, Peru placed second with 147 and Beekmantown was third with 137. Saranac Lake finished in fourth with 35 points and Lake Placid was 11th with 4.

The Red Storm’s Liam Nobles, a junior, paved the way for the boys team, winning two events — the 110 hurdles and the triple jump. He won the 110 hurdles in 15.64 seconds and won the triple jump with a leap of 45 feet, 1 inch. He also placed second in the 200-meter, finishing in 23.08. Nobles, who was a favorite in the long jump competition, faulted in his jumps.

Jake Kollmer also won two events, winning the 800-meter in 2:00.13 and the 1,600 in 4:31.20. Lake Placid’s Aidan Fay (4:33.60) was third in the 1,600 and Saranac Lake’s Sam Bickford was seventh in the 800.

Also on the distance side, Fay placed second in the 3,200 in 10:11.03, while Saranac Lake’s Liam Fletcher was eighth in 11:10.86.

The Red Storm’s Soren Wolford took second place in the 100 in 11:35, while teammates Elijah Schenk placed seventh. Wolford also finished the 200 in third with a time of 23.71. Schenk placed third in the 400 with a time of 53:00. Saranac Lake’s Cameron Garrett also scored points with an eighth place finish in the 110 hurdles.

In the throwing events, the Red Storm’s Dustin Burke placed second in the shot put with a throw of 44-1. Burke then claimed fourth place in the discus event with a toss of 124 feet.

The Saranac Lake boys took second place in the 4×400 meter relay event in 3:38.22. The team consisted of Bickford, Schenk, Wolford and Sam Madden. The Red Storm’s 4×100 and 4×800 relay teams placed fourth.

The Blue Bombers scored its final points in the 4×400 relay with Fay, Ethan Cash, Jim Guglielmi and Jesse Marshall placing sixth in 3:55.85. The team’s 4×100, 4×800 relay squads both placed eighth.

On the girls’ side, the Red Storm were led by its discus group, with Cora Hotchkiss securing a third place finish. Hotchkiss recorded a 96-02 throw and teammate Brook Burke placed fifth with a 82-05 toss.

Saranac Lake’s Cadence Kennedy (12:06.03) placed fifth in the 3,000 event, while Michaela Gillis (1:05.05) also placed fifth in the 400. Addison Ash was seventh in the 400 hurdles in 1:17.92.

Jovie Schenk had solid outing for the Red Storm, placing seventh in the 100 in 13.62 and eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 29-0.75. She also ran a leg in Saranac Lake’s 4×400 relay team which placed fourth overall in 4:25.43. Along with Schenk, the team included Ash, Gillis and Ally Bourgeois. The Red Storm girls rounded out the day by placing fifth in the 4×100 relay event and sixth in the 4×800.

The Blue Bomber girls scored points from its 4×100 relay team of Lily Fisher, Ashe Gagnon, Mya Marshall and Alexandria Smith, which placed sixth in 57.71.

Clara Boutelle earned the other points for Lake Placid with an eighth place finish in the 800. Boutelle finished the 800 in 1:06.58.

Saranac Lake and Lake Placid will compete at the state qualifier meet on Friday, May 31 at Saranac Lake High School.
