SLP girls lax wins third straight game

SARANAC LAKE — After winning its first contest this past Wednesday, the Saranac Lake Placid girls lacrosse team recorded a pair of wins on Thursday and Saturday to improve to 3-2 overall.

On Saturday morning, the SLP girls took down the red hot Massena Raiders 11-10 on the road. Prior to Saturday’s contest, Massena had won four out its last five games.

In a tightly-contested battle, the Raiders led for most of the game before the SLP girls mounted a small comeback late in the game by scoring three unanswered goals.

“Our offense and defense were solid. I think it was a very evenly matched game, they have good players and they won most of the draws,” SLP co-head coach Jeff Denkenberger said. “Kaitlyn Yando picked up a key ground ball with just over 2 minutes left that gave us the ball back and we were able to hold it for the rest of the game. It was nice to win three in a row, especially back-to-back games.”

Denkenberger added that everyone on the team contributed to the win.

“From Samara (Cirikovic) in goal to our only sub in the game they all helped and played hard and helped in some way,” he said.

Juliana Tremblay netted a hat trick and did well being aggressive on shots. Tyler Burth, Lizzie Harvey and Phoebe Peer scored two goals each. Addison Dann chipped in with one goal, whole Harvey recorded two assists. Peer and Tremblay had one assist each.

SLP is slated to play against the Ogdensburg Free Academy Blue Devils on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The location is yet to be determined. The Blue Devils are currently 2-5 overall.

SLP 8, Plattsburgh 2

Playing for the first time at home, the SLP girls topped the Plattsburgh Hornets 8-2 at the North Elba Athletic Fields on Thursday. SLP struggled with handling the ball, but played well as a team and had several strong offensive plays en route to the win.

Harvey and Clark had two goals each. Dann, Burth, Peer and Fiona Webb each scored one goal.

Clark, Harvey, Peer and Tremblay also chipped in with one assist each. Denkenberger said Cirikovic played well in goal and the team’s defense was solid.

“We had several younger players step up and play well,” he said.
