Storm hoops fall to Moriah in overtime

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake boys basketball team suffered a 69-64 overtime loss to host Moriah Vikings on Thursday to wrap up the regular season.

The Red Storm’s Caleb Akey led all scorers with 35 points. Mik Denkenberger had solid out, recording 14 points for Saranac Lake. Zack Goetz had seven points, Zack McCarthy had four, while Brady Owens and Dillon Wilson had two each.

Cooper Allen paced the Vikings with 23 points. Joe Pelkey and Logan Gilbo chipped in with double figures — Pelkey had 16 points and Gilbo scored 10. Moriah improved to 18-2 overall.

The Red Storm, which had won five of its last six contests heading into Thursday’s game, got off to a quick start, leading the Vikings 30-26 at halftime.

Moriah evened the game in the next two quarters to force overtime, where the Vikings outscored their opponents 11-6.

Saranac Lake, which dropped to 11-9 overall, is slated to host the AuSable Valley Patriots in the Section VII, Class B semifinal round at 6 p.m. on Monday.
