Storm hoopers edge out Hornets in OT

SARANAC LAKE — Caleb Akey scored 33 points to help guide the Saranac Lake boys basketball team to a 61-59 overtime victory over the Plattsburgh Hornets on their home court Thursday.

Brady Owens and Mik Denkenberger chipped in with seven points each, while Dillon Wilson added six. Zack McCarthy and Melvin Cirikovic each contributed with four points for the Red Storm.

Saranac Lake got off to a rocky start on Thursday, allowing the Hornets to take a 21-9 lead in the opening quarter. Plattsburgh held an advantage through the second and third quarter, as well.

While trailing by eight points at the start of the fourth, the Red Storm outscored their opponents 16-8 to send the game to overtime.

Akey netted four points in overtime to pull out the come from behind victory. The win improved Saranac Lake’s overall record to 9-7.

Logan Rodriguez led Plattsburgh with 17 points. Dan Hartmann had 15 points and Max Filosca added 12. The Hornets dropped to 9-6 overall.

The Red Storm will hit the road for its next contest against the Franklin Academy (Malone) Huskies at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

Seton Catholic 39, Lake Placid 37

The Lake Placid boys basketball team suffered a 39-37 loss to the Seton Catholic Knights Saturday on the Blue Blue Bombers’ home court.

Lake Placid led 17-13 at halftime, before the Knights came back late in the contest to earn the win.

Seton Catholic’s Oliver Hughes took over in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 of his team’s 21 points to help seal the win. The Blue Bombers Seb Cecunjanin kept his team close with 12 of his own during that stretch.

Cecunjanin paced Lake Placid with 27 points. Talon Jordon added five points, while Caleb Wylie and Jarrett Mihill chipped in with two points each. Owen Hayes had one point.

The Blue Bombers, which fell to 4-11 overall, are slated to take on Indian Lake/Long Lake on the road today. The game will kick off at 5 p.m.
