Skiing regional championships to be hosted in SL

SARANAC LAKE — The East Coast Ski Conference Regional Championships are set to take place this Saturday and Sunday at the Dewey Mountain Recreation Center.

The event will brings together 16 college ski teams from across the northeast US, competing for a chance to qualify for the USCSA National Championships. Colleges participating include Paul Smith’s College, Clarkson University, Cornell, Middlebury, Dartmouth, University of Vermont, University of Maine-Farmington; several varsity and club programs will also compete.

After last week’s adverse weather conditions, which left the trails at the original host, Paul Smith’s College VIC, in poor condition, the Saranac Lake-based North Country Sports Council, in collaboration with various stakeholders, secured Dewey Mountain as the alternate site.

The defending regional champions, Paul Smith’s College, are aiming to secure a three-peat on the men’s side. Meanwhile, the women’s team is determined to clinch their first-ever title.

“We are thrilled to bring this event to Saranac Lake, showcasing both fierce competition among athletes and inspiring opportunities for our local young skiers,” NCSC Executive Director Matt Dougherty said. “The ECSC championship perfectly aligns with the essence of the North Country and Saranac Lake, reflecting our community’s deep love for the outdoors and sports. I encourage locals to come out and support the teams. A heartfelt thank you to Dewey Mountain for their invaluable assistance in navigating challenging conditions, and to the dedicated volunteers who have worked tirelessly to prepare the trails.”

Saturday’s race will start at 5 p.m. and Sunday’s race will begin at 9:30 a.m.
