Nordic ski races to be held in Placid

LAKE PLACID — This village is scheduled to host has several prominent Nordic skiing events at state Olympic Regional Development Authority venues, including the Swix Lake Placid Loppet which will kick off today.

Over the years, the event Loppet, which is held at Mount Van Hoevenberg, has expanded to include the original 50-kilometer Loppet distance, a 25K Kort Loppet and citizen race, which include distances of 3, 6 and 12K. Participants can choose between classic or freestyle skiing for each distance.

Both Mount Van Hoevenberg and Whiteface Mountain will host the Nordic races of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Skiing Championships on Monday and Tuesday. Whiteface will host the Alpine championships, while the Nordic events will be held at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

The U.S. Collegiate Ski & Snowboard Association Nationals will take place at Mount Van Hoevenberg and Whiteface Mountain on March 4 to 9. The event is a multi-discipline collegiate skiing and snowboarding race.

The New England Nordic Ski Association U16 Eastern Championships will take place at the North Creek Ski Bowl at Gore Mountain in North Creek on March 8 to 10. All of the above cross country skiing events are open to the public to spectate for free.

Mount Van Hoevenberg will also host the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Cross Country Junior National Championships on March 11 to 16. The USSS Junior Nationals will bring together some of the best young Nordic skiers from 10 divisions across the United States competing in distances ranging from 5 to 15K. Age groups include U16, U18 and U20, with classic, freestyle and a mixed relay classic on the racing schedule. Junior Nationals is part of U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s development pathway and often acts as a launching pad for future U.S. Ski Team prospects.
