SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake girls basketball team was handed a tough loss at home Wednesday, falling 62-26 to Saranac Central Spartans in a Section VII, Class B matchup.
The Spartans rolled out a 13-0 lead in the opening quarter and were never really threatened the remainder of the way. Saranac Central improved to 8-2 overall with the win.
Brenna Ducatte scored 30 points for the Spartans, which earned its first win since snapping the team’s six-game win streak on Jan. 11 against Northeastern Clinton. Molly Denis had nine points and Madison Gagnier chipped in with six.
Phoebe Peer had a solid outing for Saranac Lake, recording a team-high 10 points. Madison Moody-Durant scored six points on two 3-pointers, while Emma Akey and Samra Cirikovic had four points each. Addison Dann added two points.
After giving up 13 unanswered points to start the game, the Red Storm got off to a bit of a run by outscoring the Spartans 6-2 to close out the opening quarter.

Saranac Lake closed out the contest with a respectable fourth quarter, holding the Spartans to just 10 points, while scoring seven points of their own. Peer scored four points in the final period and Moody-Durant drained one 3-pointer.
The Red Storm, which dropped to 3-7 overall, are slated to take on the Moriah Vikings on the road at 7 p.m. today. It will be the first contest between the two squads. The Vikings are currently 5-4 overall.
Following that contest, Saranac Lake will host the St. Regis Falls Saints at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. The Red Storm previously defeated the Saints 35-27 in the team’s season opener on Nov. 29.
