SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake girls basketball team snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 46-14 home victory over the St. Regis Falls Saints Tuesday night.

“We needed a win badly,” Red Storm assistant coach Ian Breen said. “We’ve been struggling a lot lately, so just to see the girls happy and get a win is big.”

After starting out the season with three straight victories, Saranac Lake dropped eight straight contests prior to Tuesday night. The team last won on Dec. 4, 2023, when they defeated Seton Catholic 28-21. The Red Storm now holds a 4-8 overall record.

Despite its past struggles, Saranac Lake dominated from start to finish, outscoring the Saints in all four quarters as all eight of the team’s players netted at least one basket.

“We’ve obviously been struggling lately, so anytime we can get the ball in the basket and get a win is good,” Breen said.

Madison Moody-Durant paced the Red Storm with 12 points — all of which came in the first half, predominantly on fastbreaks. Breen praised Moody-Durant’s performances over the last four or five games.

“She’s definitely stepped up her game,” he said. “She’s very quick, and she’s starting to use that quickness to take the ball to the basket, and she did really well in the first half.”

Kylee Meyer added 10 points for Saranac Lake, while Addison Dann and Ayla Small scored six points each. Phoebe Peer and Samra Cirikovic chipped in with four points each and Emma Akey and Tristan LaDue each added two points.

Both teams were held without a basket for nearly the first two minutes of Tuesday’s game before Dann netted the game’s first point on a layup. The Red Storm then jumped out to an 8-0 run, which was extended to 12-4 at the conclusion of the opening quarter.

Saranac Lake outscored St. Regis Falls 12-1 in the second quarter to build a 24-5 halftime lead. The Red Storm defense held the Saints in checking with key blocks from Meyer and Peer and forced turnovers.

Saranac Lake pushed the lead to 35-10 after the third period and closed out the contest with an 11-4 run. Meyer paced her team with eight points during the second half.

Olivia Wilson led St. Regis Falls with 12 points. Sarah Susice and Lyly McMahon-Gilmore recorded one point each on free throws. The Saints dropped to 1-8 overall.

The Red Storm will look to pick up its second straight victory on the road next Wednesday against the Beekmantown Eagles. Following that contest, the team will then return home on Friday, Feb. 2 for a matchup against the AuSable Valley Patriots. Both games are slated for a 7 p.m. start.
