High School Roundup: Chazy soccer edges out Red Storm
SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake girls soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to the Chazy Eagles on the road Thursday.
The Red Storm got off to a hot start when senior captain, Samra Cirikovic, blasted a shot from 18 yards out and into the back of the net around eight minutes into the game.
Trailing 1-0, the Eagles connected on two straight goals from Pender Bechard and Avery Parker in the first half to close out the contest. With the loss, Saranac Lake dropped to 2-5-1.
“I am very proud of our girls for playing a strong and physical game,” Red Storm head coach Jason Wamsganz said. “Unfortunately, sometimes bounces don’t go your way and you end up on the back side of things. That was the case today for us. Samra has been difficult to defend the past few games and has been playing the way she is capable … it really puts pressure on a defense when a forward can control the play.”
Chazy outshot Saranac Lake 19-10. The Red Storm’s goalie, Emma Akey, had 10 saves and the Eagles’ Calleigh Clark stopped six shots.
“Emma played a really good game in goal and Ayla Small and Tyler Burth were all over the field for us,” Wamsganz said. “I moved Lizzy Harvey around a bit and she too has done a nice job in different roles. It’s just nice when you have a little flexibility with a lineup and we know that people can step up and play ‘out of position’. We moved some people around and everyone did a great job playing in different positions. It really was a full team effort. Chazy has a good team and plays hard.”
The Red Storm will kick off back-to-back home contests starting today against Boquet Valley at 4:30 p.m. Saranac Lake will play Ticonderoga on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
