Storm runners sweep second straight meet

The Saranac Lake boys and girls cross country teams both improved to 5-0 on the season at a meet at the McComb State Park in Peru on Thursday.

The Red Storm teams knocked off Beekmantown Eagles and host Peru Nighhawks to remain perfect. The boys topped the Eagles 26-29 and handed the Nighthawks an 18-43 setback. The girls edged out Peru by a 27-32 score and defeated the Eagles 17-44.

Saranac Lake runner Jake Kollmer took the top spot in the boys race. Kollmer won in 17 minutes, 6 seconds.

Beekmantown’s Jon Slick placed second with a time of 17:15 followed by his teammate Noah Laidman in third in 17:45. Saranac Lake’s Sam Bickford was fourth in 18:28 and the Red Storm’s Sam Madden rounded out the top five in 18:58.

Despite Peru having the top two runners in the girls race, Saranac Lake grabbed third, fourth and fifth place to help their team secure a pair of wins. Phoebe Peer was third in 21:59, Astacia Bruno was fourth in 22:38 and Addison Ash placed fifth in 22:59.

Peru’s Maddy Welc won the girls race in 20:03 and teammate Ophelia Breen (21:44) was second.

Following the meet, the Red Storm cross country teams will race again on Tuesday in Ticonderoga. The race will start at 4:30 p.m.
