Saranac’s new mascot down to two names

SARANAC — After weeks of voting, the Saranac Central School District is finally down to two names — the Saranac Spartans or the Saranac Wolves.

The school previously went through names with the top 10 list having the names Scarlet Knights, Sabers, Stars, Bucks, Bears, Scorpions, Mountaineers and Red Hawks.

While the school is currently still using the Chiefs mascot, the name is expected to be retired following the final voting decision.

The decision to change the mascot was made in April after the state Board of Regents required schools to change mascot names referring to Indigenous people unless permitted by a recognized tribe.

The Saranac Central School previously asked community members and students to submit mascot names and ideas nearly a month ago. Since then, the voting process has gone through two rounds before this latest round, which will end on Friday.

The Saranac Central voting site gives examples of logos as well as a description of what the mascot would represent.

“The Wolf represents loyalty, family, communication, wisdom, teaching, and intelligence. Wolves hunt, gather, defend, and even educate their pack with excellent communication and body language skills,” according to the site. “The Spartan is a highly esteemed global citizen and warrior, admired by others for setting universal standards of excellence. Spartans are prepared, loyal and courageous.”
