Storm hitters win ninth straight
SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake baseball team closed out the regular season on Wednesday by winning its ninth straight game after defeating the Moriah Vikings 8-1.
Playing at home, the Red Storm got off to a hot start in the bottom of the second inning after three straight batters were walked. With the bases loaded, Jon Kratts hit a two-run single into right field to make scored 2-0.
Saranac Lake then tacked on four straight runs on RBI singles from Brady Roberts, Logan Daunais-Martelle and Nick Munn and a sacrifice flyout from Noah Munn.
Moriah’s lone run came in the top of the third inning when Jake Mascarenas hit a double to the outfield before being driven in on an RBI single from Sam Langey.
The Red Storm finished its seven-hit performance by adding two more runs to their lead in the bottom of the fifth on another RBI single from Kratts, who eventually scored after the Vikings committed an error.
Kratts and Roberts finished the game with two hits each. Daunais-Martelle, Nick Munn and Kaden Darrah record one hit apiece.
Saranac Lake’s Cedar Rivers started on the mound and struck out eight Vikings batters while giving up just three hits in 5 1/3 innings. Kratts finished the game without giving up a baserunner and striking out two.
Moriah’s Joe Pelkey recorded the loss after pitching two innings, Kaydin Sargent pitched the final four innings for the Vikings and struck out three batters.
The Red Storm finished the regular season with a record of 12-3. The team was slated to host AuSable Valley in the first round of playoffs on Thursday.
