SLP laxers end season in Massena

SARANAC LAKE — After finishing the year with one of its best records in recent memory, the Saranac Lake Placid lacrosse team ended its season with an 11-3 road loss to the Massena Raiders in the first round of the Section X playoffs.

After falling to SLP last week, the Raiders got off to a quick start on Monday, scoring three goals, before taking on four more later in the first half. Massena also held SLP without a goal in the half.

“We just didn’t have it last night, across the board,” SLP co-head coach Jeff Denkenberger said. “We struggled containing and stopping the transition which is where they got a lot of their goals. If it wasn’t for Samara (Cirikovic) having 10 saves the score would have been much worse for us.”

SLP scored three goals in the second half, with freshman Julianna Tremblay netting two and fellow freshman Tyler Burth scoring one. Jordanna Samburgh picked up one assist in her final varsity lacrosse game on Monday.

Samburgh, a senior, was also strong defensively, winning multiple ground balls and forcing some key turnovers.

“On the offensive end, they pressured us and we had trouble maintaining possession,” Denkenberger said. “We had far too many turnovers which led to transition goals for them. They are quick and we couldn’t get back to defend like we normally do.”

Kathryn Mayer and Hailey LaShomb paced the Raiders with three goals each. Joie-Lynn Jabaut also had a solid night scoring two goals.

Massena will take on the Canton Golden Bears in the semifinal round today, while SLP ended its season with a record of 9-8.

“Our girls worked hard all season, so it was tough to lose to a team we just beat last week,” Denkenberger said. “Josh (Dann) and I love coaching these girls, now we will look to next year. We want to thank all our seniors for all their hard work and dedication to the team. We also would like to thank the officials, they do a great job and although we need more of them, the ones we have are very good and work hard to run a clean game.”
