SLP girls laxers top Heuvelton, 11-7

After dropping its first game of the season, right before spring break, the Saranac Lake Placid girls lacrosse team bounced back on Tuesday night to top Heuvelton 11-7 on the road.

Tyler Burth, a freshman, powered SLP with a four-goal performance, while Sydney Lawrence and Phoebe Peer scored two goals each. Addison Dann and Lizzie Harvey netted one goal each to help the team improve to 1-1.

Despite scoring double-digit goals, SLP’s co-head coach Jeff Denkenberger said his team’s offense struggled at times.

“When they were patient they were able to find holes and score,” he said in a statement. “Towards the end of the game, we moved the ball well down the field and were able to finish.”

Early in the second half, SLP trailed by two points, but the team was able to mount the deficit, eventually tying the game at 7-7. From that point on SLP, scored four straight goals and prevented Heubelton from scoring.

“Our defense also did a better job in the second half,” Denkenberger said. “They communicated better and were able to make some key stops which kept the ball in our possession. Heuvelton played us very tough and is a good team.”

Samara Cirikovic recorded three saves in net for SLP, en route to her first career varsity win. Dann also picked up three assists, while Peer had one.

SLP is slated to host Malone today at 6 p.m. The game will be played at the North Elba Athletic Fields.
