Sandstoners drop SLP laxers
LAKE PLACID — After winning three straight games, the Saranac Lake Placid girls lacrosse team fell into a bit of a slump on Thursday, falling to the Potsdam Sandstoners 10-7 at the North Elba Athletic Fields.
Despite trailing by just two goals at halftime, SLP’s defensive unit allowed Potsdam too many chances, while offense was limited for the team.
“We were on the struggle bus today,” SLP’s co-head coach Jeff Denkenberger said.
Potsdam came away with shot after shot and many of which were shut down by SLP’s goalkeeper Samra Cirikovic.
“Sam had 13 or 14 saves,” Denkenberger said. “She had a great game. It wasn’t for Sam stopping a lot of those shots it would’ve been a lot different score.”
With a 6-4 lead at the intermission, the Sandstoners scored two straight goals to open up the second half, before SLP called a timeout to regroup.
From that point on, SLP found some life, outscoring Potsdam 3-2 the remainder of the way, while the defense held strong.
“They came back in the second half and played well,” Denkenberger said. “But you can’t get down by that many goals and expect to catch up in the second half.”
The loss dropped SLP’s overall record to 3-2. Both losses have come against the Sandstoners. SLP previously fell to Potsdam 13-7 on March 28.
“I think we’re an evenly matched team, but they got the better of us today,” Denkenberger said. “Defensively, in the first half they went right by us. We couldn’t stop them. They had a really hard time. Offensively, we need some more girls out of a few more girls. We’ve got a couple of girls that should be scoring more.”
Tyler Burth, a freshman, was on fire against the Sanstoners, finishing with four goals, while fellow freshman Lizzie Harvey chipped in one goal and two assists.
“Tyler had a great game,” Denkenberger said. “If Tyler didn’t penetrate like she did, the score would’ve been a lot different. But we can’t rely on Tyler and Lizzie to score all the goals. We need goals from other offensive players.”
Juniors Addison Dann and Sabine Denkenberger scored a goal each. Denkenberger, Norah Galvin and Kaitlyn Yando each recorded one assist.
Kennedy Emerson, Emma Fields and Alexis Smith led Potsdam with two goals each. Kenadi Moore, Keegan McGaheran, Danielle Emerson and Addyson Andrews scored a goal apiece in the win.
The SLP’s girls will host the Canton Golden Bears on Monday for their next game. The game will be played at the North Country Community College fields, with the game slated to start at 6 p.m.
