Goetz guides Storm to second win

SARANAC LAKE — Karlie Goetz went the distance Friday night, leading her Red Storm softball team to their second win of the season with a 15-5 victory over the Moriah Vikings at home.

Goetz struck out a career-high 15 and allowed just three hits and three walks, improving Saranac Lake’s overall record of 2-1. Goetz also led the charge offensively with three singles and three RBIs in her five at-bats.

After both teams were held scoreless through two innings, the Red Storm bats were able to come alive in the third inning, scoring four runs. Saranac Lake then extended its lead to 9-1 in the fourth with another solid inning.

In the fifth inning, the Vikings’ top-of-the-batting order guided them to a three-run inning to make the score 9-4. The Red Storm then scored six runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.

Saranac Lake finished the game with 10 hits, while Moriah had seven. Maddelyn Eichen led Moriah with three hits and Amelia Kazlo had two hits — a triple and a single.

The Vikings’ Jillian Eichen pitched five innings and had seven strikeouts while walking 12 Red Storm batters.

Along with Goetz, Saranac Lake’s Caterra Ratelle finished the game with two hits, both of which were singles.

Following the win, the Red Storm will travel to Peru today to take on the Nighthawks at 4:30 p.m.
