SARANAC LAKE — Coming off this past weekend’s Section VII Nordic ski invitational, local skiers competed in a 5K skate race in cold temperatures — but perfect snow conditions — at Dewey Mountain Tuesday night.

Saranac Lake’s Owen Keal secured his second high school win of the season, helping lead the Saranac Lake boys to a narrow 10 to 11 victory over Lake Placid. Keal finished the 5K course in a blazing time of 15 minutes, 55 seconds. Lake Placid standout Andrew Scanio was not far behind in 16:07, and the Red Storm’s Sam Ash rounded out the podium with a time of 16:24.

In the girls’ race, Lake Placid’s Maya Garrison edged out Saranac Lake’s Tyler Burth at the finish line, winning in a time of 18:31. Holly Ernstone continued her streak of strong finishes for the Blue Bombers, placing third in 19:55. Erenstone’s finish helped lead Lake Placid to a 10-15 victory over the Red Storm.

Pia Morelli was Keene’s top finisher, with an impressive time of 20:05.

The teams will meet again at Mount Van Hovenberg today for a 5K classic event.
