SLP boys skaters top Lumberjacks

TUPPER LAKE — The last time the Saranac Lake Placid boys hockey team hit the ice, it wasn’t all that pretty. The team suffered a 7-4 to the Tupper Lake Lumberjacks at home on Dec. 15, 2022.

“They took that loss and it was their motivation to be better,” SLP co-head coach Josh Spanburgh said.

On Thursday night, SLP got its revenge, topping the Lumberjacks 4-2 — this time on Tupper Lake’s home ice.

“Coach McHugh did a great job — after that game — of making them realize that taste is going to be in their mouth until they get this opportunity and they took advantage of it,” Spanburgh said. “They played our game right from the get-go.”

SLP’s Kaden Darrah scored twice in the win, marking his second straight multi-goal game. Noah Munn and Drew Ferebee also scored for SLP. The win improved the team’s record to 2-4.

Carson St. Louis had two assists for SLP, while Noah Munn, Brayden Harvey, Will Landriault and Kellan Duffy had an assist each. SLP’s netminder, Brayden Munn, came up big with 37 saves.

“We’re proud of Brayden Munn,” Spanburgh said. “Brayden stood on his head. He had a great game and he had a great game in his last one as well.”

Phil Beaudette and Griffin Shaheen scored for Tupper Lake. Beaudette and Gavin Mitchell also picked up assists. The Lumberjacks fall to 1-8 on the season with the loss.

Tupper Lake’s Jamin Whitmore was stellar in net recording a game-high 44 saves.

“How many times am I going to have to say it?” Lumberjacks head coach Broyce Guerette said. “Jamin is a phenomenal goaltender. He was really on his game today and that’s what really made the difference. They had some quality shots.”

Darrah opened the scoring late in the first on a rebound in front of the net. A little over a minute later, Ferebee extended the lead to 2-0 on a shot in front of the net.

“I think as a team, collectively — even us coaches — weren’t the most organized in the first period,” Guerette said. “I think that’s what kind of hurt the game. The effort wasn’t there necessarily and they came out the second period and they just progressed from there.”

Less than one minute into the second period, SLP’s Noah Munn scored the team’s third goal of the game on a pass from Kellan Duffy.

Things got chippy toward the middle of the period when two SLP players were given major penalties and game misconducts for roughing. With the two-man advantage for five minutes, Tupper Lake was able to capitalize right at the end of the second period when Beaudette found the back of the net.

Trailing 3-1 after the second intermission, the Lumberjacks captain Griffin Shaheen took matters into his hands, scoring a powerplay goal around the midway point of the third period.

With momentum swinging toward Tupper Lake, Darrah was able to seal the game with his second goal of the contest. SLP’s St. Louis, an eighth-grader, stole the puck from a Lumberjacks’ defender before he sent the puck across the ice to Darrah on a two-on-one breakaway.

“In the third period they came out harder and tried even harder,” Guerette said. “That’s why we ended up banging some goals in and coming back. We had some players make some bad choices and get some bad penalties and they capitalized on it.”

Spanburgh said he was proud of how his team came ready to play. He added that in past games, the team played sluggish early in games and that wasn’t the case on Thursday.

“They played three hard periods,” Spanburgh said. “We had a lot of adversity. A lot of penalties out there and that’s just the way the games go. We’re very proud of everybody.”

SLP saw multiple scoring opportunities, but many of them were taken away due to the play of sophomore defenseman Logan Flagg. Guerette said Flagg started his varsity career as a forward, before they switched him over to a defenseman.

“He turned into a whole new player, a whole new kid, he’s more physical and he flies around,” Guerette said. “He’s a defenseman and sometimes he’s driving to the net for the rebounds. He’s an animal. He’s a beast.”

Guerette also said Shaheen played really well. He added that he had to play a lot more than he usually had to.

“It’s tough because we have a lot of depth, but not everyone can play center,” Guerette said. “Center is a tough position. We had one of our centers get hurt at one one of our last games, so we’re kind of struggling down the middle to find somebody that fits that bill.

“So when we had one of our other guys kind of making a bad penalty and making some bad choices, it’s tough to keep putting him out there,” he added. “It kind of left us to play (Shaheen) a lot. He was getting triple-shifted sometimes. But he asked for it too, I’d bring him to the bench and he’d be like, ‘Coach, I’m good. I can keep going.’ He’s such a phenomenal talent that even at his dog-tired he can still dictate a game.”

Following the win, the SLP boys will look to pick up their second win in a row as they return to league play on the road Tuesday against Saranac Central. The game will start at 7 p.m.

The Lumberjacks will hit the road for their next game on Tuesday. The team will take on Plattsburgh at 5 p.m.
