SARANAC LAKE — With heavy snow falling and the night lights on at the Dewey Mountain Recreation Center, it was a solid night of racing for all of the local varsity Nordic ski teams on Tuesday. But for the Lake Placid boys and girls varsity Nordic ski teams especially, it was an even better night — both Blue Bomber squads recorded wins over Saranac Lake and Keene.

The Lake Placid girls posted a team score of nine, which beat out Saranac Lake with 14 and Keene with 25. While the Blue Bombers girls claimed the team win, it was Saranac Lake’s Tyler Burth who won the girls’ 5K in a time of 22 minutes.

A trio of Lake Placid skiers followed behind Burth, starting with Holly Ernstone (22:24) in second place, Maya Garrison (22:42) in third and Harley Cohen (24:01) in fourth to lead the team to victory.

Saranac Lake’s top three skiers were rounded out by Jordanna Samburgh (24:32) in sixth place and Kelsi Burth (28:08) in ninth. Keene’s Pia Morelli had the fastest time for her team, placing fifth in 24:13. Her teammates, Zarella Gulli was seventh in 26:47 and Ella Whitney was 13th in 34:23.

In the boys’ race, Lake Placid’s Andrew Scanio, the reigning NYSPHSAA individual state champion, edged Owen Keal, of Saranac Lake with a time of 17:40. Keal finished in second place in 18:08. Scanio’s win came less than one week after he fell to Keal in the classic 4.5K sprint at the Cascade Ski Center in Lake Placid.

Saranac Lake’s Sam Ash finished in third place in 18:45, but with the Lake Placid duo of Aidan Fay (19:35) and Colin Francis (20:44) finishing in fourth and fifth place, respectively, the Blue Bomber boys were able to lock up their first victory of the season. Lake Placid finished with a score of 10, while Saranac Lake had 11 points.

Morgan Martin rounded out the top-three skiers for Saranac Lake with a sixth-place finish in 20:50. David Wubs was the lone skier for the Keene boys, placing 20th in 44:25.

Following the race, the Nordic ski teams will take on other teams from around the state on Saturday at the Section VII Invitational at Mount Van Hoevenberg. The race will start at 12 p.m.
