TUPPER LAKE — The Tupper Lake boys’ hockey team is off to a rocky start this season.

The Lumberjacks dropped its third straight game Wednesday night, falling 10-0 to the Massena Red Raiders at home. The loss also marked the first time Tupper Lake has been held without a goal. The team previously lost to Salmon River 13-1 on Monday and Ogdensburg Free Academy 6-3 this past Friday.

Lumberjacks head coach Broyce Guerette said he thought his team was capable of doing a lot more.

The Red Raiders’ Jake Smutz got his team off to a quick start scoring three goals in the first three minutes of play. His goals were assisted by Brady Frost, Chris Marasco and Aronhiawaks Rice.

Tupper Lake then held its ground defensively for most of the first period, until Massena’s Ryder Sunday found the back of the net with 12 seconds left to give his team a 4-0 lead. Sunday’s goal was set up by Payton Puente and Thomas Eggleston.

The second and third period were much of the same, with the Red Raiders scoring three goals each in both periods.

Five players from Massena scored during that stretch. Carter King had two goals, while Frost, Eggleston, Puente and Parker O’Neill each scored one.

Despite being outshot 60-17, Tupper Lake had a few chances, most of which came from co-captain Griffin Shaheen. The junior forward, who led his team with 30 points last season, had multiple shots but was unable to find the back of the net.

Tupper Lake’s netminder, Brayden Shannon, started the game and had 37 saves before Jamin Whitmore came at the end of the second period. Whitmore finished the game with 13 saves, while Massena’s Jake Linstad recorded 17 saves.

The Lumberjacks were slated to take on Saranac Lake Placid for a non-league game on Thursday. The team will return to its league schedule when they face off against the Canton Golden Bears on the road Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
