Red Storm runners sweep meet

LAKE PLACID — The Saranac Lake cross country teams continued their successful season as both the boys and girls swept past Lake Placid, Northeastern Clinton and Boquet Valley/Moriah on Tuesday.

The race was held at Mount Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid, which showcased a different cross country course from previous seasons in preparation for the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships, which will be held at the same venue.

The changes to the course didn’t slow down the Red Storm boys. The team took nine out of the top 12 spots on the way to a 21-39 win over Lake Placid and two identical score victories of 15-50 over Northeastern Clinton and Boquet Valley/Moriah. The Blue Bombers picked up its lone win over Northeastern Clinton 17-44.

With the sweep, the Saranac Lake boys improve to 10-0 on the season, while Lake Placid moves to 5-4.

The Red Storm boys’ duo of Sam Ash and Jake Kollmer finished first and second, respectively. Ash won the race in 16 minutes, 28 seconds and Kollmer finished in 16:39. Following closely behind was Lake Placid’s top duo of Aidan Fay and Andrew Scanio. Fay took third place in 17:05, while Scanio was fourth in 17:34.

The next four runners all competed for the Red Storm, including Aiden Hessletine (17:57) in fifth place, Morgan Martin (18:46) in sixth, Sam Madden (19:01) in seventh and Paul Fogarty (19:17) in eighth. Other top performers for Saranac Lake included Max Hall (19:27) in 10th place, Alex Evans (19:29) in 11th and Keaton Daley (19:30) in 12th.

The Blue Bombers were rounded out by Colin Francis (19:20) in ninth place, Colton Kondrat (20:50) in 16th, Kenny Lawrence (21:42) in 19th and Alex Dawson-Ellis (24:10) in 39th.

On the girls’ side, Lake Placid’s Lilly Rother was the overall winner, topping the girls’ field in 20:57. The Blue Bomber’s Kai McKinnon then finished in third place.

Despite two runners finishing in the top three, the Red Storm’s depth proved to be a difference-maker as the team had seven runners claim spots in the top 12 earning the sweep to improve to 7-1 on the season.

Saranac Lake ran past Lake Placid by a 25-34 score. The Red Storm girls also picked up wins over Northeastern Clinton and Boquet Valley/Moriah by identical 17-46 scores.

The Blue Bombers girls recorded their win over Northeastern Clinton 22-24 to move to 5-3 on the season.

Addi Ash, of Saranac Lake, was her team’s top runner finishing as the race’s runner-up in 21:27. The Red Storm’s Phoebe Peer took fourth place in 22:21, while her teammate Astacia Bruno was right behind her in fifth at 22:30.

Saranac Lake’s Nelle Aaron (22:56) finished in eighth place, while three of her teammates rounded out the top 12. The Red Storm’s Sabine Denkenberger (24:11) took 10th place, Zoe Carpenter (24:26) finished in 11th and Brooklynn Shumway (24:59) earned 12th.

Lake Placid’s Harley Cohen had a solid outing. Cohen took ninth place in 23:23.

The Blue Bombers’ were rounded out by Jenna Fay (25:33) in 14th place, Holly Erenstone (27:42) in 19th and Mya Marshall (27:49) in 20th.

Both the Lake Placid and Saranac Lake cross country teams will travel for their next meets on Tuesday. The Red Storm will compete against AuSable Valley, Beekmantown and Ticonderoga at Fort Ticonderoga, while the Blue Bombers will compete against Moriah/Boquet Valley, Peru and Seton Catholic at Camp Dudley in Westport. Both meets will start at 4:30 p.m.
