Five Tri-Lakes tracksters to compete at states
SARANAC LAKE — Five local track and field athletes from the Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake school districts will compete at the New York State Public High School Track and Field Championships at Cicero-North Syracuse High School on Friday and Saturday.
The Red Storm will send Sam Ash, Mitchell Ellsworth and Gabe Wilson and the Lumberjacks will send Olivia Ellis and Nolan Savage.
Ellis, a junior, will compete in the pentathlon — a combination of high jump, long jump, 110-meter hurdles, shot put and 1,500-meter run — at the state meet.
She qualified for states after winning all five events, while setting personal bests in each event at the Section 10 track and field state qualifier this past Friday at Potsdam High School. Ellis was not only crowned the Section 10 champion but she was also named Section 10 league MVP.
Tupper Lake’s Savage also qualified for the state meet after winning the Section 10 title in shot put. Savage, a senior, threw the shot put 40 feet, 11 inches to take first place while beating the rest of the field by over two feet at the state qualifiers.
Saranac Lake’s top shot put thrower, Ellsworth will compete against Savage. Ellsworth, a junior, claimed the Section 7 title and followed it up by launching the 12lb shot put 49’3″ at the Section 7 state qualifiers this past Friday at Beekmantown High School.
Ellsworth and Savage both have experience at the state level. Both competed at the indoor track and field state meet in March.
The Red Storm’s Ash was a double winner at the Section 7 state qualifiers this past Friday. Ash, a junior, won the 1,600-meter in 4:35.61 and the 3,200-meter competitions in 10:09.77.
Wilson was Saranac Lake’s third athlete to qualify for states. At the state qualifiers, Wilson tied Beekmantown’s Joshua Burgin in the high jump competition. Both Burgin and Wilson achieved a 5-11 jump to share the top spot.
