SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake Placid lacrosse team had been on a bit of hot streak as of late, but that all came to abrupt end on Wednesday after an 11-10 loss to the Potsdam Sandstoners at North Country Community College in Saranac Lake.

SLP had previously fallen to Potsdam 11-5 over a month ago and despite falling again, the team showed they have improved since the season-opening loss.

Trailing 8-5 at halftime, SLP quickly shifted momentum toward their side by scoring two straight goals from Alex LaDue and Phoebe Peer to bring the game within one.

After the Sandstoners extended the score to 9-7, the two teams traded goals twice to make the score 11-9. Sabine Deckenberger and Sydney Dann recorded a goal each for SLP during the stretch.

With just under 40 seconds remaining in the game, and down by two goals, SLP’s chance of coming back looked bleak until Lily Fisher picked up a loose ball and cut past a Potsdam defender before shooting the ball into the lower-left corner of the net for the goal.

After scoring SLP their 10th goal of the game, the team won the face off and stormed down the field. With around 10 seconds left in the game, LaDue cut in front of the net before making a pass to Peer who stood in front of the goalie’s crease. Peer’s shot was blocked by the Sandstoners’ goalie and sailed over the net to seal the game.

The loss drops SLP’s record to 3-5 on the season.

LaDue, a senior, was excellent yet again, pacing SLP with four goals. She currently leads the team 34 goals. Deckenberger scored twice for SLP and Dann, Fisher, Peer and Sydney Lawrence buried a goal each in the loss.

Deckenberger and Peer also picked up two assists each, while Sydney and Addison Dann each had one assist. SLP’s Emma Wood had a solid performance in net, recording 10 saves.

The team will face off against Salmon River on the road Saturday.
