Willard Hanmer to return after 10 years

SARANAC LAKE — After a 10-year hiatus, the William Hanmer Guideboat and Canoe race will return to Saranac Lake on July 3.

The race began in 1962 as a tribute to Saranac Lake guideboat builder Willard Hanmner and ran for 50 years.

Volunteers hope to bring it back to its former glory. Kathy and Sue Dyer are leading the Traditions in the Green Side volunteer group, which aim to bring back Saranac Lake’s past events.

Up until 2012, the event ran every Fourth of July weekend. The race had a Lake Flower loop, followed by a carry into the Saranac River down to the Saranac Lake Fish and Game Club on Bloomingdale Avenue. Spectators cheered on racers from the lake, river banks and bridges along the water.

The finish line at the fish and game club mirrored the start with a celebration of families, racers, food, activities and music.

The Tradition in the Green Side group is currently seeking volunteers and local sponsors.
