The biathlon World Cup season kicks off this weekend in Kontiolahti, Finland, and most names on the U.S. roster will be familiar to anyone who has followed the team in recent years.

U.S. Biathlon announced this week that its International Competition Committee has named 10 athletes to compete in the opening events of the 2020-21 International Biathlon Union World Cup circuit, which starts Saturday. Six of those 10 were on the 2018 Winter Olympic team in South Korea, and some of the other four have plenty of experience in international competition.

“The roster includes a balanced mix of veteran talent and Olympic hopefuls,” U.S. Biathlon said in a press release.

The women’s team features four Olympians: Clare Egan of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, Susan Dunklee of Barton, Vermont, Joanne Reid of Grand Junction, Colorado, and Maddie Phaneuf of Old Forge, who was on the 2018 Olympic team but got sick and did not compete.

Deedra Irwin of Pulaski, Wisconsin, rounds out the women’s squad.

The men’s side has Olympians Sean Doherty of Center Conway, New Hampshire, and Leif Nordgren of Hinesburg, Vermont, plus another veteran of the U.S. team, 2020 World Championship team member Paul Schommer of Appleton, Wisconsin. Finalizing the men’s roster are Jake Brown of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Max Durtschi of Ketchum, Idaho.

Kontiolahti, Finland, will play host to the first two IBU World Cups, including an abbreviated two-day opener Saturday and Sunday. The World Cup will remain in Kontiolahti for the second event Dec. 3-6. The circuit then travels to Hochfilzen, Austria, for the third and fourth World Cup events on Dec. 11-13 and Dec. 17-20.

The U.S. Biathlon team does some of its training in Lake Placid, and some of its staff live there, including two homegrown four-time Olympians: High Performance Director Lowell Bailey and Athlete Development Director Tim Burke.

Starting at $19.00/week.
