Moriah blanks LP girls

PORT HENRY — The Lake Placid girls soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision on the road Tuesday against Moriah.

The Blue Bombers, who now own a 1-1 record, out shot the Vikings 18-14 but were unable to score. Sage Baker netted the lone goal of the match, finishing off a corner kick play with 8:19 remaining in the contest to lift the hosts to victory.

Lake Placid freshman Olivia Ferebee, who scored four goals in her team’s 6-1 season-opening win over Willsboro Saturday, was held in check by a strong Vikings defense.

“We had a lot of pressure early and didn’t capitalize,” said Lake Placid coach Brendan Gotham. “They marked Olivia the whole game. She wasn’t able to do much. Moriah has been really strong for the past five years or so. We’re looking forward to playing them at home later in the season.”

Mikenna Valentine earned an assist on Baker’s game-winner.

Hannah Gaddor was credited with 12 saves while earning the shutout victory in nets. Lea O’Brien tended the goal for the Blue Bombers.

Despite the loss, Gotham said he’s pretty happy with the Blue Bombers effort two matches into the season.

“We’re playing well,” he said. “We only have three seniors right now and we have an eighth-grader starting. We have a lot of young talent.”

Lake Placid’s girls next host Saranac Lake on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at their North Elba Show Grounds field. The contest will be the first of the season for the Red Storm.

The Lake Placid boys soccer team will be in action today, hosting Saranac Central at the North Elba Show Grounds starting at 4 p.m.
