Bombers boys notch 1st win
WILLSBORO — Lake Placid boys soccer coach Stuart Hemsley said, “It wasn’t pretty” but on Saturday, the Blue Bombers picked up their first victory of the season, beating Willsboro 1-0 on a second-half penalty kick.
In a match played in driving 30 mph winds, Joose Kahkonen lifted Lake Placid to victory when he buried a penalty kick midway through the second half for the lone goal of the match. Kahkonen’s succesful shot followed a Blue Bombers’ corner kick that hit a Warriors’ player in the arm to draw the foul.
“We snatched a 1-0 PK win,” Hemsley said. “The boys were happy but it wasn’t pretty.”
Hemsley credited his goalkeeper Jack Armstrong with another strong performance in helping the Blue Bombers improve to 1-3-1.
Willsboro finished with an 18-6 advantage in shots. Armstrong earned the win in nets with 13 saves.
With the win, the Blue Bombers salvaged a season split with the Warriors, who topped Lake Placid 2-1 in overtime in the season-opening match.
Lake Placid will be in action again today, hosting AuSable Valley at the North Elba Show Grounds with the opening kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
The Blue Bombers will be on the road Wednesday to take on Beekmantown under the lights at 6 p.m., and then wrap up the week with a home match Saturday against rival Saranac Lake slated to begin at 11 a.m.
