Craig Wood to host Bar Fly Open

LAKE PLACID — North Country bar and restaurant employees and patrons will belly up to the Craig Wood Golf Club in Lake Placid on Tuesday, Sept. 15, to mark 42 years of the annual Barfly Open Golf Tournament.

The two-person scramble tournament benefits the Tri-Lakes Humane Society in Saranac Lake. Teams must have a combined handicap of at least 20. The scramble will incorporate tee times and not a shotgun start. To enter and get a tee time, please call Craig Wood at 518 523 9811. The event is supported by RockBottomGolf.com.

Over the past five years, tournament proceeds have totaled more than $20,000, according to Lea Bedore, President of the Tri-Lakes Humane Society.

“We have a budget of $275,000 annually. Of that, 17 % comes from contracts with local municipalities,” Bedore said. “We have to fundraise for the rest.

“We typically put the money into the general fund and then dole it out as needed. Luckily, we have a community that turns out and helps us pull it off.”

The goal of the humane society is to find great families and homes for their four-legged residents.

The tournament entry fee of $65 per person for non-members and $45 for members entitles the player to golf, cart, skins opportunities, and a socially distanced awards ceremony to end the day due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Bar Fly Open is also seeking sponsors for holes at a cost of $100, which includes signs with each businesses’ logo. To sign up, contact Cathy Moore through email at moorecatherine6@gmail.com or call 518-524-1765.

7th Annual Mutt Strut

Another fundraiser taking place to help our four-legged friends is the seventh annual Mutt Strut, an event to benefit the Tri-Lakes Humane Society and North Country SPCA.

This year it will become a virtual 5-kilometer run or walk during the week of Oct. 11-18.

The COVID-19 pandemic prevents runners and walkers from coming together as a group, so participants will walk or run a course of their choosing to complete their 5 kilometers and share their journey through the event’s Facebook page.

The cost for registration and a T-shirt is $30. Register online at https://crm.nonprofiteasy.com//10511/Pages/Events/#/Details/6966//. For more information, contact cms@trilakeshumanesociety.org or bryeanna@ncspca.org.
