Neill, Scholl win WFC tourneys

LAKE PLACID — The recent holiday weekend was celebrated at the Whiteface Club and Resort with a pair of annual competitions surrounding July 4 Independence Day.

The unique One Club Plus Putter event, a nine-hole tournament played over Whiteface’s front side, was captured Friday afternoon by Roger Neill shooting 39 with the club of his choice and a putter. The senior winner was Dennis Chagnon with a round of 42.

The women’s tournament was taken by Nicole Scholl, who posted 48, while Betsy Senkowski took the senior title, shooting 60.

“Over the years, we’ve seen so many players shoot their best nine-hole score with just these two clubs,” said J. Peter Martin, Whiteface Club professional. “It’s important to pick the right club that works for you, and interesting to see how well players improvise and adapt with just one club from tee to green.”

The Flag Tournament punctuated the July 4 holiday on Sunday afternoon. Vinnie Martucci grabbed first place, followed by a second-place tie between Ken Cosby and Tom Bailey. Wendy Poole took the women’s crown, with Annalis Simpson second.

The next tournament on the Whiteface Club schedule will be the Northeastern New York PGA Section’s third Pro Classic event of the season on Monday, July 13. The 18-hole event features club professionals and assistants from around the section.
