Skutt and Kelting take top spots in high school race

LAKE PLACID — Mike Skutt and Sophia Kelting earned victories Thursday in a Nordic dual meet between Lake Placid and Saranac Lake at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

Skutt, of Lake Placid, won the 5-kilometer boys race in 16 minutes, 50 seconds while Kelting, of Saranac Lake, won the girls race in 20:16.

Saranac Lake skiers Nick Kelting (17:32) and Colter Cheney-Seymour (17:40) placed second and third in the boys race, followed by Lake Placid’s Andrew Scanio, who finished in 17:48 to edge Adiran Hayden, of Saranac Lake, by one second.

Sylvie Linck, of Saranac Lake, took second in the girls race with a time of 21:10, Annie Rose-McCandlish, of Lake Placid, was third in 21:48 and Bella Wissler, of Saranac Lake, placed fourth in 21:50. Saranac Lake’s Evelyn Eller finished fifth with a time of 22:53.

Saranac Lake and Lake Placid will meet again Tuesday, Jan. 14 at Dewey Mountain Recreation Area in Saranac Lake.

Nordic skiing at the state level in New York is based on the top three finishers in each gender.
