KOENIGSSEE, Germany — USA Luge juniors Dana Kellogg and Duncan Segger outraced the field Saturday on the classic German track in Koenigssee to win their first Junior World Cup doubles race.

Among their challengers were teammates Sean Hollander and Michael O’Gara who finished fourth. Hollander, of Lake Placid, and O’Gara, of La Crescenta, California, were marginally ahead of Kellogg and Segger at the midpoint of each heat. But the winners pulled ahead through the difficult lower sections of the track that runs along the foot of Watzmann Mountain.

Kellogg, of Chesterfield, Massachusetts, missed some off-season training time as he fulfilled his military commitment to the U.S. Army’s World Class Athlete Program. While Kellogg was occupied, Segger, of Lake Placid, was backstopping his Lake Placid High School baseball team to another playoff run.

When they finally resumed training together, Kellogg and Segger made up for lost time. Their two winning heats in German Bavaria totaled 1 minute, 43.263 seconds, taking gold by 0.07 of a second.

Hollander and O’Gara, with minimal runs together, finished less than 0.8 behind the winners.

Zack DiGregorio, of Medway, Massachusetts, took fourth place in singles, winding up 0.2 of a second from the podium, while Hollander, was next in fifth place, 0.24 from the top three. Ian Smith, of Carlisle, Massachusetts, had the fourth quickest final heat and took eighth place, with Keaton Jens, from St. Charles, Illinois, finishing 12th.

Chevonne Forgan paced the American junior women with her sixth-place effort. Forgan, of Chelmsford, Mass., clocked 1:44.243. She trailed Austrian Lisa Schulte by over a second. Schulte competed in the opening two World Cup races of the season, and in fact, was the halfway leader in Igls. Forgan’s teammate, Sophie Kirkby, from Ray Brook, wound up 10th.
