Second-half surge carries Red Storm past Bombers

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake and Lake Placid boys basketball teams faced off against each other Wednesday night to open their seasons.

After a slow start, the Red Storm were able to take control of the game in the second half on the way to a 43-29 victory over their rival. Saranac Lake outscored the Blue Bombers 26-13 in the second half to lock up the win.

Saranac Lake’s Zach Churco led all scorers in the game with 11 points, nine of which came in the second half. Teammates Nate McCarthy and James Catania each chipped in eight points, while Landen Faubert connected for two 3-pointers and six points.

Jack Armstrong paced the Blue Bombers with 10 points, Matt Brandes hit for seven points and Zach Gavin scored five.

Saranac Lake and Lake Placid are both playing in a tournament this weekend at Paul Smith’s College. The Red Storm will face Tupper Lake at 7 p.m. Friday and Lake Placid plays Old Forge at 5:30 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Northern Adirondack 47, Lake Placid 25

ELLENBURG — The Northern Adirondack girls basketball team took control early and held off Lake Placid the rest of the way Tuesday on the way to a 47-25 victory.

Deidra Kellerman scored 12 points and Grace Crawford chipped in five to lead the way for the Blue Bombers in their season-opener.

Northern Adirondack’s Kira LaBarge led all scorers in the game with 14, while her teammate Isabella Gilmore hit for 10.
