Runners take on Triad Challenge

TUPPER LAKE — More than a dozen trail runners and hikers tackled the third annual Triad Challenge in Tupper Lake on Saturday, climbing the three mountains of the Triad in a timed race.

Shawn Spriggs was the overall winner, clocking a time of 1 hour, 49 minutes and 54 seconds in the race, which included climbs up Goodman and Coney mountains and Mount Arab. All race times include driving between the three peaks.

Lake Placid’s Nancie Battaglia was the top female with a time of 2:07:11. She was fourth overall. Mike Fiorentino (1:59:44) placed second and Jack Burke (2:00:20) was third. Linda Pickering (2:13:31) placed fifth, Deb Osterhoudt (2:21:30) took sixth and Rob Osterhoudt (2:21:31) rounded out the top half of the field of 14.

Ella Kruczynska (2:26:27) finished in eighth and Bert Lee, Jen Damiano and Russie Lee each clocked a time of 3:03:34 for ninth, 10th and 11th places. Kay Paxiquett (3:36:36) finished in 12th, Jackie Beattie (3:36:37) came in 13th and Laura Baker (3:36:40) completed the field.

This was the first year the Tupper Lake Rotary Club sponsored the event, which included a shirt, food and drinks from Raquette River Brewing in Tupper Lake.

The three hikes combine for 7.6 miles on trails for the race.
