Red Storm earn sweep at Fort Ti

TICONDEROGA — The Saranac Lake boys and girls cross country teams earned sweeps Tuesday in a Champlain Valley Athletic Conference meet held at Fort Ticonderoga.

The Red Storm squads chalked up three victories apiece, knocking off Seton Catholic, Moriah/Boquet Valley and host Ticonderoga. Lake Placid also had runners in the race but were not listed in the team scoring.

Although Saranac Lake’s boys won, the defending Class C state champions did not land a runner in the top three, with Peter Fogarty finishing fourth and James Catania placing fifth. They crossed the line together to turn in Saranac Lake’s fastest results, both posting finish times of 17 minutes, 30 seconds.

Logan Van Buren of Moriah/Boquet Valley won the boys race in 16:15, Jake Glicksman of Seton Catholic was runner-up in 16:45, and Lake Placid’s Mike Skutt took third in 17:05.

The scenario was similar for the Red Storm girls as they went 3-0 in the meet. Their top finisher was Gwen Mader, who placed sixth in 23:16, and teammate Katie Samperi finished three seconds back in seventh place.

Eighth-grader Harley Cohen won the girls race. Cohen, a Keene student competing for Lake Placid, set the pace with a finish time of 21:50. Sophia McKiernan of Moriah/Boquet Valley placed second in 21:59. Seton Catholic’s Faline Yang rounded out the top three, taking third in 22:12.

The Red Storm boys and girls squads both improved to 6-0 with the three victories.

Saranac Lake and Lake Placid are next in action Saturday in the Section VII Cross Country Invitational, which will be held at SUNY Plattsburgh on the same course where the state championship meet will be held this fall.
