SL girls advance to title game

CHAZY — The Saranac Lake girls soccer team will be playing for a tournament championship Friday evening, thanks to a great comeback effort on Wednesday at Chazy Central’s annual preseason event.

Facing host Chazy in semifinal action, the Red Storm erased a 3-0 deficit on the way to rallying to a 4-3 victory over the Eagles. With the win, Saranac Lake moves on to face Beekmanton in the title title tonight under the lights starting at 7 p.m. Beekmantown edged Plattsburgh 3-2 to advance to the final.

Chazy scored its three goals during the first 17 minutes of the match, and from there it was all Saranac Lake. Celine Juneau, Hadley Lucas and Olivia McLennan netted Chazy’s goals, and the Red Storm then started their comeback. Serena Stevens scored twice for Saranac Lake and Sofia Kelting and Chloe Reardon each found the back of the net once in the win.

Kelting, a freshman, netted her first varsity goal and the team’s first of the season 29:59 into the opening half, an Stevens buried her first of two less than five minutes later to cut the Red Storm deficit to 3-2 entering intermission.

Reardon tied the match at 3-3 with 25:33 gone in the second half, and Stevens followed with the game-winner with 4:30 remaining on the clock.

Chazy held a 13-12 edge in shots. Mecalyn Sousa recorded 10 saves in goal for Saranac Lake and Olivia Rotella registered eight stops in nets for the Eagles.
