Thunderbirds rally late to sweep SL Surge

PLATTSBURGH — With a golden opportunity to a aviod a five-game sweep, the Saranac Lake Surge stumbled late, suffering a 12-10 setback to the Plattsburgh Thunderbirds Sunday at Lefty Wilson Field.

The Surge stormed out to a 10-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning, but the host Thunderbirds answered with 11 runs in their final four at-bats to improve to 9-0 in Empire Professional Baseball League play.

After scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth, Plattsburgh plated five runs in the sixth to make it a 10-8 game in favor of Saranac Lake. The Thunderbirds then scored four more times in the bottom of the eighth while rallying to a 12-10 lead. The Surge had one last shot at turning the game around in the top of the ninth as they loaded the bases with two outs. But Saranac Lake came up empty, when third baseman Daniel Dominguez struck out for the final out of the contest.

The loss was the sixth straight for the Surge, who fell to 3-8.

Catcher Stephen Octave paced Saranac Lake with three hits and four RBIs, and second baseman Landon Lau and shortstop Skylar Mercado each chipped in with a pair of hits in the loss. Zach Sullivan led Plattsburgh with four hits and four RBIs. Jordan Holloman, Simon Palenchar and Dalys Binder added two hits each in the win.

The Surge now have off until Thursday when they play their first home contest of the season, a July 4 holiday game at Petrova Ave. starting at 1 p.m.
