Surge take series from Plattsburgh

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake Surge wrapped up its series against Plattsburgh with a big win Sunday, topping the Thunderbirds 12-2 in an Empire Professional Baseball League game at Petrova Avenue.

On offense, four players rapped out two hits each for the Surge, and seven players batted in runs. Pitcher Dino Cattai led the way in the field, working seven innings while allowing just five hits and two earned runs.

Taran Tani, Stephen Octave, Alexander LaFayette and Jason Aponte all finished with a pair of RBIs in the victory. Jesse Russo also went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.

Saranac Lake took four out of six games from Plattsburgh in the series and evened its record at 16-16. More importantly, the victory intensifies a scheduled showdown with the Road City Explorers for the fourth and final playoff spot in the six-team EPBL.

Plattsburgh fell to 17-8 with the setback.

The Surge is a game and a half behind the 17-14 Explorers in the standings with three contests remaining between the teams to conclude their regular seasons.

The two teams will battle it out in a doubleheader on Monday beginning at 11 a.m., with the last matchup slated to start at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
