Locals shine on home course

LAKE PLACID — Saranac Lake resident Richard Burke was the top local finisher in Sunday’s Ironman Lake Placid triathlon.

Burke completed the 140.6 swim-bike-run course in 10 hours, 12 minutes, 32 seconds. He finished third out of 264 racers in the 50-54 age group and 41st out of 2,379 overall. Burke covered the 2.4-mile swim in 1:05:20, the 112-mile bike in 5:26:32 and the 26.2-mile run in 3:32:38.

Sean Davis was the second local across the finish line, carrying a lightning-fast swim time of 57:53 into a 5:38:34 bike and 3:37:35 marathon. Davis improved on his previous two Ironman Lake Placid times of 10:47:13 (2016) and 10:46:31 (2017).

Jay Niederbuhl, of Saranac Lake, was third among locals with a time of 11:53:18, while Caitlin Skufca, of Wilmington, was the top local female with her time of 12:29:30.

Kimberly Maguire, a 36-year-old from Lake Placid, was the second local female with a time of 13:05:43 and Mel Frazer, a running and skiing coach at Lake Placid High School, was third in 14:30:20.

Matt Russell, a professional triathlete who grew up in Lisbon, New York, won Sunday’s Ironman Lake Placid with a time of 8:27:57. He completed the swim course without a wet suit in 56:42, then more than made up the difference with a course record-breaking time of 4:27:27 on the bike and a 2:58:56 marathon.
