SARANAC LAKE –Tim Smith is a Saranac Laker who likes to repeat, and maybe live by words spoken in memorable quotes. He’s an avid biker, as well as an avid golfer, and on Saturday after playing in Saranac Lake Moose Lodge #457 tournament, he said “Eighty-five percent of success is showing up.”

Although Smith may have added an extra five percent to the phrase Woody Allen once uttered, he had a really successful day in the Moose Club tournament held at the Craig Wood Golf Course in Lake Placid.

Smith, along with Mike Noon, Rhett Colby and Chip Nagle, claimed the title in the event, firing a 12-under par 60 to win by two strokes in the four-person scramble.

“Once we showed up, the other 15 percent took care of itself,” Smith said with a smile.

The team began play with a birdie on the 16th hole, a par four, and then posted three pars in a row. But from there, starting on the par-3 second hole, Smith and his teammates heated up and played their next 14 holes at 11 under par to grab the victory.

“We started slow, really slow, and we just said it’s just too nice a day, it’s a great tournament, let’s just go and stick with our game plan,” Smith said, adding that sinking some long putts and notching eagles on two par-five holes on the front nine were big factors in the win. “Rhett dropped this long bomb putt on No. 2, and all of a sudden we started smiling.

“Mike Noon then drained a long putt for an eagle on the sixth, and our smiles got even bigger. And then it started getting warmer, and from that point on, we really started having fun. When you start having fun, the pressure is off. The ones who have the most fun win, so we must have sounded like we were having fun.”

Smith explained that normally, Marc Lewis of Lake Placid joins in when the team gets together for scramble tournaments, but he was unable to make it because his mother Margaret recently passed away. Smith said he was thinking about Marc during an event that otherwise was bathed in sunshine and golfers having a really good time.

“We were playing for Margaret,” Smith said.

Three other teams tied for second place with rounds of 63.

After the tournament, golfers headed to Saranac Lake for the awards barbcue dinner held at the Moose Club.

The 21-team event raised money for the Saranac Lake Moose Lodge #457 and the community programs the club sponsors.
