Ti rallies past Red Storm

TICONDEROGA — For the second year in a row, Saranac Lake’s softball players saw their season end in the Section VII, Class C semifinal round.

On Tuesday, the Red Storm were unable to hold onto a four-run lead as Ticonderoga rallied for an 11-9 victory.

In a battle that went back and forth early, Saranac Lake scored runs in its first five at-bats to grab an 8-4 edge, but the Sentinels got to work late. They scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to cut their deficit to 8-6, and then erupted for five runs in the sixth to take the lead for good.

Saranac Lake picked up its last run in the top of the seventh.

Both teams pounded out 11 hits in the close contest.

Playing in her final high school game at Saranac Lake, Marissa Gibbs led the Red Storm with three hits, including a triple. Amya Hurteau also chipped in two hits for Saranac Lake and teammate Meagan O’Brien tripled.

Saidi St. Andrews and Karyssa Alkinburgh paced Ticonderoga with three hits each and Emily Purkey added two hits in the victory.

In addition to Gibbs, Maggie Carpenter, Madie Reardon, Kiana Carter and Kelsey McCarthy also saw their high school athletic careers come to an end as seniors for the the Red Storm on Wednesday.

Saranac Lake’s season ended with a 7-10 record.

“I’m extremely proud of how far these girls have come this season and last,” said Red Storm head coach Suzanne Nicholas. “They should be proud of themselves. Great athletes and great kids. The seniors are leaving big holes but I know the rest will step up to fill their shoes.”
