Mountaineers defend TNT titles
SARANAC LAKE — The Mountaineers men’s and women’s ruby teams both defended their championships in the TNT Tournament held at SUNY Plattsburgh on Saturday, April 27. Both teams convincingly won two matches on the way to claiming titles.
The Mountaineers men, who have won two consecutive championships in the Can-Am Rugby Tournament, beat Paul Smith’s College 53-5 in their opener and followed with a 20-5 triumph over Clarkson in the final.
Kenyan Outlaw came up big for the Mountaineers in the back line with several superb runs and was named the men’s tournament Most Valuable Player.
The Mountaineers women piled up 106 points while blanking both of their opponents. They started with a 46-0 victory over SUNY Plattsburgh and went on to defeat Paul Smith’s College by a 62-0 score.
Saturday turned out to be a memorable day for longtime Mountaineer Trish Wickwire, who scored the first try of her career on the final play of her team’s second game.
The Mountaineers men and women are next slated to play on May 11 in Rutland, Vermont.
